Mallika: HISSS is bolder than MURDER

If you are in dilemma whether to watch HISSS or not, here's a piece of news that might help you decide.

Mallika Sherawat claims that her latest film HISSS crosses all boundaries of oomph when compared to her films in the past. She even claims that the film has more of her trademark oomph than the audiences have seen in MURDER or even KHWAHISH.

Mallika says, "The audiences can expect more from HISSS. It surpasses MURDER and KHWAHISH in terms of oomph. The audiences won't be disappointed watching HISSS. Though films of this kind have been made earlier too, but by all means watching HISSS should be a visual treat for the audiences."

Well, hope the dilemma is sorted now. The facts that Mallika has shed not only her skin but also her clothes yet again is an added reason to catch HISSS this week.

ESPN World Cup 2010 TV Schedule

The 2010 FIFA World Cup has officially started, and everyone wants to know what the TV schedule is for ESPN. We are here to give all the important information about the TV schedule.
ESPN Group Play TV Schedule
June 11th - We've got two games today on the 2010 World Cup schedule. The first game, at 10:00am EST, is Republic of South Africa vs Mexico (Match 1), and will be shown on ESPN and ESPN3.com. At 2:30pm EST, we'll have Uruguay vs France (Match 2), also on ESPN and ESPN3.com
June 12th - Three more games on the 2010 World Cup schedule. At 7:30am EST South Korea takes on Greece (Match 3), with live coverage on ESPN and ESPN3.com. At 10:00am EST, Argentina faces Nigeria (Match 4) in a match also shown on ESPN and ESPN3.com. Then at 2:30pm EST, the U.S. team takes on England (Match 5), only on ABC.
June 13th - We've got Slovenia and Algeria (Match 6) ESPN and ESPN3.com at 7:30am EST. For the 10:00am EST slot we've got Serbia and Ghana (Match 7) on ESPN and ESPN3.com. Germany vs Australia (Match 8) rounds out the 2:30pm EST spot on ABC.
June 14th - The first game is The Netherlands vs Denmark (Match 9) at 7:30am EST, followed by Japan vs Cameroon (Match 10) at 10:00am EST, followed by Italy vs Paraguay (Match 11) at 2:30pm EST. All three games are on ESPN and ESPN3.com
June 15th - New Zealand and Slovakia (Match 12) start things at 7:30am EST, with Ivory Coast and Portugal (Match 13) at 10:00am EST and Brazil vs North Korea (Match 14) at 2:30pm EST. Again, all three games on the 2010 World Cup schedule today are on ESPN and ESPN3.com
June 16th - Honduras vs Chile (Match 15) at 7:30am EST and Spain vs Switzerland (Match 16) at 10:00am EST are the final two matches of the first round of group play, both shown on ESPN and ESPN3.com. At 2:30pm South Africa takes on Uruguay (Match 17) on ESPN and ESPN3.com

A study by Nielsen revealed that almost 34% of soccer fans in India will follow the FIFA World Cup 2010 on mobiles, much on a higher side than the global estimate of 21%. Also 47% of people surveyed in India said that they are soccer fans after Brazil, Portugal, Egypt, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Venezuela, Vietnam and Italy.

Gaming developers like jumpgames, India games and games2win have developed a number of games for the World Cup. India Games have even tied up with electronic cards, a company which owns the exclusive rights for the FIFA 2010 cup.

JumpGames, has come out with 2 soccer games which will be compatible across phone platforms like Symbian and Google's Android.

Contest2win is also planning to launch a role playing soccer game with the Mahabharat theme and has tied up with a leading telecom operator to come out with the game 2 couple of weeks after the World Cup 2010 is in full swing.

Synopsis :
Preeti Sengupta (Tanushree Dutta) is an airhostess living in with her boyfriend Karan Malhotra (Rohit Roy). They share a nice 2BHK apartment in the northern suburbs of Mumbai and are befriended by their elderly neighbor Madhusudan Tanha (Anupam Kher), a struggling poet and lyricist. Tanha is a loner living with his only companion, a Persian cat whom he lovingly calls Shehzadi.

Preeti is possessive and has issues with trust. When she mistakenly suspects her boyfriend to be unfaithful, she throws him out of the house but soon realizes she can’t afford the payment on the apartment on her own. On the advice of a fellow airhostess, she advertises for a tenant to share her apartment. Enter Neha Bhardwaj (Neetu Chandra), a modest small town girl asking for accommodation. Very impressed by her simplicity and respectfulness, Preeti believes she has found a perfect roommate. The two girls soon become close their camaraderie leads them to even become companions.

Until things begin to go disastrously wrong slowly and steadily. Preeti's seemingly normal life is thrown off gear with a series of incidents that take her by surprise. Is it just co incidence or is someone deliberately causing all the trouble? Is Neha really as simple as she seems? In the grip of mystery, unforeseen and gruesome events and murder at its heinous best, the truth seems shocking as it unfolds. American Idol Season 9 | American Idol 2010 - 'American Idol': On the scene for Top 11 'performance' night

Your Aunt Whittlz took her first steps into Idoldome Oh-Ten this afternoon with what could tentatively be termed optimism, PopWatchers. I have learned my lesson after yea these many years of writing blogs on this here website: You commenters can be tough, but you are never more cutting than when the author expresses a certain weary disdain for the subject at hand. New Season, New Attitude! was my TLC-reality-show-style motto today, fueled by the gorgeous L.A. weather and a meeting we had with the editors earlier in the year where they told us to stop writing so much about the damn Idol live broadcasts, because there’s no reason why anyone other than Slezak should have his personal life ruined enhanced by this travesty. I was going to get in, get out, write short, and then catch up on last week’s Lost, which I missed thanks to my annual trip to SXSW.

But you know, Idol is a cruel mistress. And because I feel confident that America got to see the full brunt of the heinocity they hath wrought on stage tonight, I’m sure you won’t mind when I answer my colleague Mandi Bierly’s rhetorical tweet question, “Worst night of Idol ever?” with a hearty “Probably, but how can you even tell anymore?”

Great job, speed-dialing Americans. We now get to spend the next 10 weeks with these yahoos. Hollywood, are you ready to make some noise?

From the top: Cory the Warm-Up Comedian was back tonight. Nothing about what he does has changed. American Idol is the only place in Hollywood where women don’t think twice about jumping on stage and shaking their moneymakers just because some shady stranger (i.e. Cory) tells them to. Should you find yourself in the Idol audience at any point in the future, have some dignity and don’t go up there. Also, do not be tempted by the ridiculous contestant swag Cory is tossing out during commercials, exclusively consisting of tote bags and t-shirts adorned with slogans like “Cougars for Casey.” (I’m not at all exaggerating when I tell you that particular item features an illustration of a woman who bears more than a passing resemblance to Kara DioGuardi.) Instead, wait for Cory to ask if you’d rather have what’s in the commemorative tote bag. It is not an iPod Touch. It is a Samsung Mystic, which is a type of telephone. There, I have just saved you some time.

Tonight’s signs were in no way extraordinary, because rhyming “Rox” with “Bowersox” is about as creative as putting the “Go” in “Gokey”. (What, you thought he was off the hook just because he’s not on the show anymore? Fools.) The in-house celebrity crop was similarly lackluster, with just Gordon Ramsey and Chi McBride (both Fox plants) on hand. This week’s mentor, Miley Cyrus, was also there, alongside her Last Song producer Adam Shankman, who also produced the Oscars. I am told he also has something to do with a televised dance competition, but I don’t watch those.

When Your. Top. 11. took the stage at the top of the show, I had a few observations: I would like Katie Stevens to start wearing more age-appropriate shoes. Didi Benami cuts a Carrie Underwood-esque figure. Crystal Bowersox looks great in a hippie dress. Siobhan Magnus needed to be singing Pat Benatar in her outfit/fauxhawk, or nothing at all. Michael Lynch could devour up to three of his fellow contestants without noticeably changing in size. With about 20 seconds to go, Debbie — whose wide-leg pants I now covet — directed Ryan Seacrest toward two audience girls sharing a single sign proposing marriage. He gestured the world’s least-sincere yesss fist-pump at the prospect of statutory polygamy. And THIS. was American Idol.

“Tonight, a lot is at stake,” Ry-Ry said to Randy, once the imminent catastrophe was under way. I wondered how far ahead of time Ryan thinks up his on-air conversation topics. But he had a point: Tonight’s performances would determine the tour roster, a magical unicorn of opportunity that Simon shortly revealed to be mostly about $$. Meanwhile, Kara started having a private conversation with Simon, an activity that did not stop for two hours. I do not know why she is so intent upon being his total bestie, nor do I know what they are talking about. I could warrant a few guesses, but in the interest of being kinder to Kara now that she has moved into the official Loopy Dancing Kook spot behind the judging table, I’m gonna lay off for fear she comes looking for my head later this season, threatening to hang it from her rearview mirror.

As the Idols filed off stage to get ready to perform, Andrew Garcia — who has creepily been reminding me of Gokey lately; anybody else? — shared a nervous handshake with Lee Dewyze. (Note: I am convinced at least two of this season’s contestants are using fake names.) Simon scored an Altoid from someone. I watched the Miley Cyrus introductory clip intently, trying to figure out if she was sporting a nose ring. I moved my hips like yeah when appropriate.

Lee Dewyze (fake name #1) sang a song called “The Letter” by a band called the Box Tops. This was the first of the night’s many terrible performances, rendered all the more so by one little technical detail that will haunt me until the day I die. As I myself tweetered this evening, only on American Idol can someone sing a song by a guy who died a week ago, with nary a mention of the guy who died a week ago. If you have been reading EW’s music blog, the Music Mix, over the course of the last week, you are well aware that Box Tops lead singer Alex Chilton died of a heart attack at age 59 on Wednesday, as he was preparing to travel to SXSW for a reunion performance with Big Star, the undeservedly under-the-radar band he fronted in adulthood. I can read Web stats; I know that most of you are not, in fact, reading EW’s music blog, the Music Mix. But still. Alex Chilton. Had a Replacements song written about him, helpfully titled “Alex Chilton”? Wrote the theme song to That ’70s Show, known before its cultural reappropriation as “In the Street,” off Big Star’s debut album, #1 Record? Is any of this ringing a bell? If, say, Lee Dewyze had sung a Beatles song the week John Lennon died, or a Nirvana song the week Kurt Cobain died, or a Corey Haim song two weeks ago, do you think we would have made it through the broadcast without hearing the names of those dearly departed individuals? Have I made my point yet? Did you kids miss my rage?

During the first commercial, Simon and Randy made a beeline for Miley. Cory asked us if we were “ready for some Paige Davis.” I worried that someone was about to come in and start aggressively rearranging the room’s furniture. Meanwhile, Paige Miles sat on the stools, waiting.

Paige Miles couldn’t really walk in her shoes, like she said, and minced backstage during her intro clip intro like a deer with bunions. Sadly, I do not believe that better footwear could have saved her performance of “Against All Odds,” because no one has ever sung a decent version of that song on this show ever. EVER. EV. ER. Not that 3/4 of the judges were overtly paying attention to what I dubbed “Paige Miles Sings Her Own Harmony, Live!” Simon and Kara were chatting merrily away. Randy was leaning back to try and join their conversation. Only Ellen was watching Paige, like some dweeb actually doing homework in study hall. After being eviscerated by the judges, Paige earned a lone standing ovation, from Tim Urban’s dad. Mr. Urban Dad was promptly chastised for doing this by one of Tim Urban’s 49 siblings.

Next commercial, Kara went straight to Miley.

Despite going all Super Bowl Springsteen on at least one cameraman, Tim Urban received the most scathing critique I’ve ever heard on this show, a drive-by Uzi shooting of takedowns that started off funny and then just kind of made us all depressed. As much as his chipper reggae version of “Under My Thumb” last week made me wonder if they’re even bothering to teach reading comprehension in schools anymore, he didn’t deserve that. Next commercial, Aaron Kelly appeared on stage and the swaybots in the pit started shrieking, but these two things were not connected: Tim had pulled a lucky blonde on stage for a hug. He may not be up to snuff as a vocalist or interpreter of lyrics, but if anyone’s interested in making a quick buck, you should send this kid on a dollar-per-squeeze hugging tour of American high schools. Meanwhile, Ryan and Aaron sat on the stools with nothing to say to each other. Kara talked to Simon.

When it was announced that Aaron would be tackling Aerosmith’s song about a giant deadly meteor hurtling towards earth, the mom next to me leaned over to her son and said, “I think this song’s too big for him.” During the performance — which was nowhere near as bad as it should have been; this kid is like the worrisome little love child of Clay Aiken and David Archuleta — Randy leaned back in his chair, pointed at Aaron, and wiggled his eyebrows suggestively at Miley.

Everyone listened respectfully to Crystal. Simon even nodded along. I do not know why the judges keep treating her like the talented kid in the t-ball league where the parents have voted that everyone gets trophies and therefore no one may stand out. Let’s all take this week and screen The Incredibles a couple times on DVD, to remind ourselves why exceptionalism is important. And then let us recall the words uttered by one Mister Randy “Yo, Yo, Wow, Um, Yo, It Was Terrible” Jackson, in the wake of Crystal’s performance: “I am so happy now!”

America, don’t you want Randy Jackson to be happy?

Next commercial break, Randy talked to Miley.

I would have given large sums of money to see watch Gordon Ramsey hold back the sniggers during Big Mike’s performance, but then it occurred to me I should probably keep my money in case Big Mike asked us to tip our servers and try the veal. When the Love Unlimited Orchestra exited the stage, a woman in the row behind me was crying.

During Andrew Garcia’s baby-seal-esque clubbing of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” I wondered 1) if his wallet chain was connected to an actual wallet and 2) what number I dial to vote for Rickey Minor. And I swear to god beyond that all I could think was, “Wow, this guy was so much better that one time he covered ‘Straight Up’ on acoustic guitar.” Weird, I know. I feel kinda bad boxing him in like that, but no one else seems willing to bring it up so I guess it’s on me.

Next commercial, Kara went to explain Andrew’s problem to Miley. My rudimentary lip-reading skills picked up her saying, “He did this Paula song, and it was ridiculous, and then…” Here, she gestured a collapse.

During Katie Stevens’s performance, Simon held his head in his left hand, one finger clearly in his ear. Katie’s voice could not have sounded wronger (yes, I know that’s not a word) on the Fergie cover, but everyone seemed very thrilled that she picked a song from somewhere within the last two decades. Every time I hear the judges go off on how the pretty pageant pony needs to sing her age, I wonder if they would have told LeAnn Rimes to work younger, too.

Next commercial, Simon talked to Miley. Casey sat on the stools and tried to decide if the “Cougars for Casey” shirt made him uncomfortable or not. If I had to guess, I’d say no. Of all the contestants, he seems to be the only one having a straightforward good time.

During Casey’s introductory clip reel, Kara leaned back in her chair and rolled her eyes at Miley. I hope to god it was because of the “I’m a big fan…of your dad” crack, and not because she is secretly two-timing Casey with her husband. During Casey’s performance, Ellen looked the most consternated I’ve seen her look since she went on Oprah to talk about gay marriage. Then Simon complained that Casey’s version of “Power of Love was “identical” to that of Huey Lewis. It was not. Casey repeatedly transposed “might” and “just” in the chorus. This bothered the crap out of me.

Next commercial, Kara literally shoved Simon out of the way to get to Miley.

Didi Benami (fake name #2) is like Megan Joy with conviction, and I want to know what kind of upper-arm workouts she does. After Didi was run out of town by the judges and we cut to commercial, Debbie the Stage Manager came over and said something to her that looked reassuring. Kara sat at the judging table, violently winging shirts at people’s heads on Cory’s behalf. She throws approximately as well as she dances. The horn section assembled on stage, demolishing my last hopes that Siobhan Magnus was singing a Pat Benatar song. Right before we came back from break, Debbie moved three of the horn players into a semicircle around Ry-Ry, who noticed he was now the only one in the group not wearing sunglasses. A helpful swaybot handed up a pair of Olsen Twins-style shades; Ryan rejected them. A dad in the pit handed up another option just as Ryan’s dapper groomer emerged from the wings with a third set. In the end, I believe Ryan went with both latter pairs at some point.

I love that people keep calling Siobhan “different.” When I was her age, folks were very fond of using “unique” in a similar way. Me, I’m going with “so f—ing weird.” When Your. Top. 11. reassembled on stage to observe the clips reminding us what they just did, Siobhan got a lot of hugs. Personally, I do not care for her Glambert-lite screeching, but do not want her to ever, ever stop doing it. In fact, when she suggested she screech for a whole song next week, I mentally set my DVR to “save until manually deleted.” Siobhan’s f—ing weirdness is, without question, one of only two reasons the show is worth watching this season in my opinion, the other being the free mini-concerts we’re getting each week from Crystal.

When the show was over, everyone went straight to Miley.

Actress Freida Pinto has denied that she was approached by director Sam Mendes to play the lead in his next Bond movie
opposite Daniel Craig.

Freida’s official spokesperson in a statement said, “I would like to confirm that as of today, Freida Pinto has not been approached to be part of the next Bond film.”
“It is of course very flattering to even be rumoured to be part of a Bond film but she has certainly not been approached for the role of the next Bond girl opposite Daniel Craig as yet,” he added.

Freida is currently out of the country working on her forthcoming projects which include, Julian Schnabel’s Miral, Woody Allen’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger and Tarsem Singh’s Dawn of War.

With Four More Months to Make the Switch, Over 400 TV Stations Are All Digital

More than 400 television stations have stopped broadcasting in old-fashioned analog form, according to the Federal Communications Commission, months before the rescheduled transition to digital TV.

Turning off the analog signal allows stations that are short of cash to save money, but it also means a loss of service for viewers who have not yet upgraded their older television sets.

The long-awaited move to digital TV, which promises clearer pictures and more channel choices for over-the-air television viewers, had been scheduled to happen Tuesday, more than three years after the federal government set the day as the deadline for stations to cease analog broadcasting.

This month, however, the government delayed the move until June 12, citing a troubled transition process and a fear that millions of Americans would find that their televisions had been rendered incapable of receiving signals.

Despite the delay, 421 stations, most of them in smaller TV markets, chose to turn off their analog signals Tuesday. When they are combined with the 220 broadcasters that already broadcast solely in digital, the F.C.C. estimates that 36 percent of the nation’s stations will have switched by Wednesday morning.

President Obama signed legislation last week that pushed back the deadline until June and allowed some stations to turn off their analog signals earlier.

Nielsen Media Research estimates that about 5.8 million households, or about 5.1 percent, have not upgraded their sets. Households that rely on rabbit ears and older analog televisions to watch TV over the air need to install a converter box to view the digital programming.
The government’s coupon program to subsidize the cost of the converter boxes is experiencing a backlog; the stimulus bill Mr. Obama signed on Tuesday allots $650 million more for the initiative.
The F.C.C. said it had sought to ensure that at least one ABC, CBS, Fox or NBC affiliate in each market would stay on the air in analog form until June.
In about 20 markets where all the major affiliates intended to turn off the analog signal on Tuesday, the agency pushed stations to keep at least one signal on the air for news and emergency information.
“We are trying to make the best of a difficult situation,” Michael J. Copps, the acting chairman of the agency, said in a statement.
“While this staggered transition is confusing and disruptive for some consumers, the confusion and disruption would have been far worse had we gone ahead with a nationwide transition on Tuesday,” Mr. Copps said.
In major markets like New York, all the major affiliates will remain on the air in analog until June.
San Diego is the largest market where three of the biggest affiliates are turning off their analog signals. In that market, only 7 percent of people rely on over-the-air signals.
“We have been running crawls and stories and spots, everything required by the F.C.C., in great abundance, to try to end whatever confusion there is,” said Ed Trimble, the general manager of KFMB, the CBS affiliate in San Diego.
Most stations across the country are choosing to stay in both analog and digital form until June 12, meaning that viewers will see four more months of reminders to buy a converter box.
“There are still a few consumers who are not quite prepared yet, and that’s why we elected to go with the delay,” said Brent Hensley, the general manager of KOCO, the ABC affiliate in Oklahoma City.
Under the F.C.C.’s current rules, other stations may be allowed to turn off their analog signals in March and June.
Once stations stop analog broadcasting in local markets, the stations are bound to hear from confused consumers.
The F.C.C. said more than 4,000 people were available to answer the agency’s phone number, 1-888-CALLFCC (1-888-225-5322), to help consumers who are confused about the switch.

Konkona to team up with Mammootty in Kannada film?

Bangalore, Feb 7 (IANS) He is on cloud nine after signing on Mammootty for 'Shikari', the Malayalam superstar's first Kannada film. And director Abhay Simha now wants to rope in Bollywood actress Konkona Sen Sharma for the female lead.

'Konkona is busy with her Hindi projects, but she was impressed with the script. We hope that we would be able to get her dates once the project rolls,' said Simha, who received a lot of appreciation for his directorial debut 'Gubbachchigalu', about the journey of city kids to search for sparrows.

Explaining how Mammootty came on board, Simha told IANS: 'One of my batchmates from FTII (Film & Television Institute Of India, Pune) was working as a cinematographer for a Mammootty film. Through him I got the telephone number of Mammootty's secretary. I called the secretary and told him I have an interesting script for the star. Within a few hours I got a call from Mammootty, who asked me to e-mail the script. I immediately sent the content of the script on e-mail.

'A few days later, Mammootty's secretary called me again and asked me to call the actor personally. Two days later I met Mammootty and he agreed to work in the film and said he would finalise the dates in a few days. When he agreed to do my Kannada film, I was on cloud nine.'

Mammootty has acted in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films, but he hasn't worked in any Kannada film because none of the scripts impressed him. So 'Shikari', which is about the systematic exploitation of nature and environment, will be the superstar's first Kannada film.

'The screenplay has some novel features. When I was writing the script, I had always thought about Mammootty sir,' said Simha.

'Shikari' is being produced by Mangalore-based industrialist N.R. Shetty, who had earlier made 'Shubham' with Shivadhwaj in the lead.

Simha believes in good cinema and his passion for filmmaking grew after he made a 45-minute documentary on the psychology of twins, triplets and quadruplets. He has 19 documentaries, 10 short films and two music videos to his credit.

'I believe in good cinema, which is both entertaining and sensible. No, I don't believe in abstract films because a film has to reach out to the common man,' said Simha.

Well-known Kannada director Girish Kasaravalli is Simha's source of inspiration.

'I derive all my inspiration from him. He too is a student of FTII. I have seen all his films and I'm awe-struck by his brilliance. I was motivated by him and have now decided to concentrate on Kannada films rather than work in Bollywood,' said Simha.

Sophia Myles enjoyed tough stunts in 'Outlander'

New York, Feb 5 (IANS) Playing a tough action role in Howard McCain's sci-mythic 'Outlander' was a dream come true for British actress Sophia Myles because she wanted to be pushed to her physical limits.

The 28-year-old actress, who earlier portrayed a royal blood in the romantic drama 'Tristan & Isolde', plays princess Freya in the action-adventure 'Outlander' and had a great time performing the stunts for the film.

'I'm surrounded by so much testosterone (male action) in this film. I had been wanting to do an action film for ages because I've never been pushed to my physical limits before,' Sophia told IANS over e-mail from Los Angeles.

'Freya is different. She gets her hands dirty. She gets to fight the Moorwen (alien monster in the film), which delighted me when I read that in the script. She's more masculine than any other character I've ever played,' added Sophia.

Released in the US Jan 23 to a mixed response, 'Outlander' is releasing Friday in India. The movie will simultaneously also release in Hindi with the title 'Kurukshetra'.

Other actors in the film include John Hurt and Jim Caviezel.

Why LUCK BY CHANCE didn't take a flying opening?

It doesn't happen with too many movies. However, it appears that it is certainly happening for LUCK BY CHANCE i.e. collections being disheartening for a film which is genuinely quite well made. Zoya Akhtar has made an excellent debut with this Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Rishi Kapoor starrer (yes, these three men are the pillars of this film that is based on Bollywood) but surprisingly the collections over the opening weekend haven't been as per expectations.

The film has seen a good release but the occupancy at theaters has only been in 50% odd range. Now that's surprising considering:

a) The film has fetched excellent reviews all over and class audience is certainly loving it

b) Farhan Akhtar has been accepted as an actor after ROCK ON

c) There isn't much opposition around with VICTORY not finding an audience at all (more about it later) while RAAZ - THE MYSTERY CONTINUES has done most of the business in its first week

So why has LUCK BY CHANCE not taken a flying start?

1. Maybe audience has already shelled out enough money on films like RAAZ - THE MYSTERY CONTINUES, CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, GHAJINI and RAB NE BANA DI JODI.

2. Maybe the title didn't give a clue around what the film was all about.

3. Maybe the music didn't pick up much.

4. Maybe the happenings in the film were too Bollywood centric and hence weren't comprehendible by aam junta.

May be ... may be ... may be!

In scenarios like these, there are quite a few 'may be' statements that come into picture.

One just hopes that the film picks up though. Are there good enough chances for that? Looks like quite a task considering there is DEV D (6th Feb), MERE KHWABON MEIN JO AAYE (6th Feb), BILLU BARBER (13th Feb) and DELHI 6 (20th Feb) in weeks to come. Here is keeping the fingers crossed!

FADED GLORY (Friday through Wednesday) With 35 titles offered, this has to be one of the largest retrospectives of the independent black cinema — a k a “race movies” — ever assembled in New York. The program begins on Friday at 7 p.m. with a screening of a new 35-millimeter print of Spencer Williams’s magnificent work “The Blood of Jesus,” a 1941 film that energetically tramples the rules of Hollywood storytelling as it tries to translate the style and substance of a religious revival meeting into cinematic terms. The film scholar Jacqueline Stewart will introduce the program. At 9:30 p.m., there’s “God’s Step Children” (1938), the first of several films in the program by the indomitable Oscar Micheaux, one of the earliest and certainly the most persistent creator of films for African-American audiences. Micheaux’s 1925 “Body and Soul,” which will be screened at 8 p.m. on Saturday, with musical accompaniment by the pianist Donald Sosin and the bass singer Kevin Maynor, is probably the director’s most fully realized work. It is a parable about twin brothers — one an alcoholic thief, the other a college-educated inventor — both played by Paul Robeson. ‘CHE’ (R, 4:17, in Spanish and Englishshown in two parts 2:09 and 2:08) Nearly four and a half hours long and spanning more than a decade, “Che” surely deserves the overworked, frequently misapplied label of epic. But it’s a narrow epic, and while Benicio Del Toro, in the title role, offers a performance that’s technically flawless, the movie is politically naïve and dramatically inert. (Scott)

Kristin Scott Thomas gives a remarkable lead performance, and Elsa Zylberstein as her sister is nearly as good. A climactic plot twist cheapens and diminishes the film somewhat, but it is still, for the most part, a powerful and subtle melodrama. (Scott)

‘JUST ANOTHER LOVE STORY’ (No rating, 1:40, in Danish) As this twisty Danish thriller zigzags between austere realism and surreal gore, you have the not unpleasant sense of being taken for a ride. It may not go anywhere in particular, but it is as exciting as a trip through a well-equipped, scary fun house. (Holden)

‘LAST CHANCE HARVEY’ (PG, 1:38) Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson don’t make a lot of sense as a screen couple, but there’s something irresistible about watching two people fall in love, even in contrived, sniffle- and sometimes gag-inducing films like this one. (Dargis)

‘LUCK BY CHANCE’ (No rating, 2:26, in Hindi and English) This enjoyable Bollywood offering spends a lot of its time wittily satirizing Bollywood itself as it tells the story of two young actors finding and losing romance as they try to find movie fame. Farhan Akhtar is a find as the male lead; Zoya Akhtar, his sister, wrote and directed. (Neil Genzlinger)

★ ‘MAN ON WIRE’ (PG-13, 1:34) Philippe Petit’s 1974 tightrope walk between the towers of the World Trade Center might have seemed, at the time, like a crazy stunt, but James Marsh’s beautiful documentary understands it as a work of art. (Scott)

‘MARLEY AND ME’ (PG, 2:05) The bland, obsequious screen adaptation of John Grogan’s best-selling 2005 memoir of his up-and-down relationship with an unruly Labrador retriever has a surefire tear-jerker ending. But the bond between human and pet and what they can learn from each other remains unexplored. (Holden)

★ ‘MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY’ (No rating, 1:27) The day after a one-night stand, two young, black San Franciscans (Wyatt Cenac and Tracey Heggins) muse on matters of love, race and urban life in Barry Jenkins’s modest, witty and self-assured first feature. (Scott)

‘MEMORIAL DAY’ (No rating, 1:33) Spring-break delirium is equated with the excesses at Abu Ghraib in this dubious exercise in mock-documentary conceptualism. (Nathan Lee)

★ ‘MILK’ (R, 2:08) Gus Van Sant’s film about Harvey Milk (1930-78), the San Francisco City supervisor who was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the country, is less a standard biopic than a sharp, lyrical history lesson, touching not only on a crucial decade in the gay-rights movement but also on the rough and tumble of big-city politics and the tricky ways of love. Sean Penn outdoes himself as Milk, balancing his intense conviction with an unusual and welcome playfulness. The large supporting cast is also excellent, and includes James Franco as Milk’s lover and campaign manager, Scott Smith, and Josh Brolin as Dan White, Milk’s colleague on the Board of Supervisors and also his murderer. ★ ‘MOSCOW, BELGIUM’ (No rating, 1:42, in Flemish) You may have observed the characters’ banal situations in countless other movies, not to mention in your own life, but it is unusual to find them explored with such matter-of-fact truthfulness. (Holden)

‘MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D’ (R, 1:41) Adding an extra dimension to the fondly remembered 1981 Canadian slasher about a rogue slayer in a small mining town, “My Bloody Valentine 3D” blends cutting-edge technology and old-school prosthetics to produce gore you can believe in. And if the gas-masked villain is less than terrifying, his pursuit of a naked young woman (Betsy Rue) is inspired. If there were an award for acting full-frontally while wearing sky-high stilettos, Ms. Rue would surely teeter away with it. (Jeannette Catsoulis)

‘NEW IN TOWN’ (PG, 1:36) In this flat romantic comedy Renee Zellweger plays a corporate shark from Miami dispatched to an underperforming branch in New Ulm, Minn., where the folksy locals (including Harry Connick Jr.) thaw her frozen heart.

‘NOT EASILY BROKEN’ (PG-13, 1:39) Directed by Bill Duke and based on a novel by the megachurch minister T. D. Jakes, this story of a marriage under stress is hokey and sometimes clumsy, but anchored in an earnest engagement with the lives of its characters, who have the good fortune of being portrayed by a fine cast. ‘NOTORIOUS’ (R, 2:02) The legend of Biggie Smalls, the Brooklyn-born rapper who was murdered in 1997, is given the full epic-melodrama-biopic treatment in this uneven, rarely dull film, among whose producers are Smalls’s mother, Violetta Wallace, and his friend and mentor Sean Combs. Those two important figures are played by Angela Bassett and Derek Luke, while Smalls is impersonated by Jamal Woolard, whose faithful mimicry compensates for some of his limitations as an actor. ★ ‘RACHEL GETTING MARRIED’ (R, 1:54) Anne Hathaway plays Kym, furloughed from rehab to attend her sister Rachel’s wedding. The director, Jonathan Demme, working from a script by Jenny Lumet, takes a fairly conventional family-therapy drama and packs it with exuberant vitality. There is ample sorrow and recrimination at this party, but nonetheless you’ll be sorry when it ends. (Scott)

‘THE READER’ (R, 2:03) You have to wonder who, exactly, wants or perhaps needs to see another movie about the Holocaust that embalms its horrors with artfully spilled tears and also asks us to pity a death camp guard. Kate Winslet plays the guard; Stephen Daldry directs. (Dargis)

‘SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE’ (R, 2:00) A modern fairy tale from Danny Boyle “Trainspotting”) about a pauper angling to become a prince, this sensory blowout largely takes place amid the squalor of Mumbai, India, where lost children and dogs sift through trash so fetid that you swear you can smell the discarded mango as well as its peel. At first glance the film seems like little more than an extended anecdote, but underneath this plain narrative surface is a lucid and melancholy inquiry into the current state of American society. 'American Idol' invades Salt Lake City

American Idol heads to Salt Lake City for tonight's audition episode. That's David Archuleta's hometown, in case you had forgotten.

Ryan Seacrest tells us they were hoping to find the next generation of the Osmonds. Lo and behold, David Osmond is 29 and the son of Alan Osmond, "the oldest of the performing Osmonds." The we learn that his father had to stop performing because he has multiple sclerosis, which is followed by the revelation that David is also fighting MS. He says that MS has a course of ups and downs -- at the lowest points, he needs to use a wheelchair and can't play guitar. He sings "Something Within Me" by Take 6. He's good, but Paula says it wasn't the best song choice because it's a group song and didn't showcase him as a frontman. They all give him very constructive criticism, which we are supposed to take as him possibly getting no votes. But he comes out of the door with a golden ticket, which is no surprise.

Oh goodness, next is Tara Mathews (pictured), who was introduced at the beginning of the show as "Salt Lake City's only goth." She, however, tells Ryan that, despite her black attire and overdone makeup, she is not trying to look depressed or be goth or whatever. In a separate interview, she says, "You can't judge people by the cover of their book." Yeah! Someone might be carrying around a copy of Atlas Shrugged, but maybe they have Confessions of a Shopaholic tucked inside. You never know. Do not judge. She also claims to have ESP about when people are going to die "in real life or on TV." In the audition room, she sings "One Day I'll Fly Away" from Moulin Rouge. It is not good, but Randy gets kind of crazy rude, pretending to beat his head against a wall, looking at his watch. Simon tells her she sounded like a baby, so she says, "I'll just leave now since you obviously didn't like it." She stomps out flipping the bird at the camera, saying, "Blur it out, blur it out." Well, that was strange.

Montage of badness: Aleesha Turner bleats her way through a song, Katie Sullivan shouts, Rich Kagel drives Simon to say, "You're never in a million-billion years going to win a show like this." "Can I sing somethin' else?" Rich asks.

Chris Kirkham brought Greg the Rabbit (his friend in a pink bunny suit) and wears a shirt with a distressing rendition of Simon's face on it, and another copy of it on a stick. He sings "Roll to Me" with Greg behind him, and Simon freaks out and makes him stop. He starts over with his rabbit-friend farther away and sings "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." He gets through three words, and they say it just isn't working and they make them both leave. Greg the Rabbit lifts Simon in the air before they go.

The next segment features Ryan saying that they expected everyone to be nice in Salt Lake since Archie is so sweet, which is followed by clips of people saying thank you as they get negative comments from the judges.

Frankie Jordan says she is the next American Idol. She's a stay-at-home mom and is ready to become an entertainer. She says she feels very confident about her chances and in the audition room sings Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" in a very faithful rendition. The judges are down with it, though, and they all vote yes very quickly.

Megan Corkrey is also a stay-at-home mom. She, however, is in the midst of a divorce, which happened to coincide with her discovery that Idol was coming to town, which she took as a sign. She sings "Can't Help Lovin' That Man of Mine" for the judges. Her tone is interesting, which is the same word the judges choose. They decide that interesting means good, and she is through to Hollywood. Simon calls her one of his favorites, saying, "You are one of the few I'm going to remember."

Andrew Gibson thinks he has old-school soul. Um, no. Simon says he has "a soul," but not soul.

Austin Sisneros is president of his senior class at his high school, which has some pretty ugly sweaters. Dunno if they are supposed to be like letterman jackets or what. He sings Train's "When I Look to the Sky." Randy says it was OK, but not the best song choice. He asks if he can sing his other song choice, Raffi's "It Takes a Village." He does, and it's better, but Randy says he has a voice though he is making weird song choices -- he votes yes nevertheless. Kara agrees that there is something there. Paula parrots Kara, saying that there is something going on there. Simon says yes, too, so he is through. I think he was OK, but I don't expect to see him get beyond Hollywood.

Montage of teary-eyed auditioners, followed by a hilarious mashup of bad auditions.

Taylor Vaifanua is 16 and recently moved back to Utah from Samoa. She talks about being tall (5'11" or so without heels and well over 6 feet with) and is pretty charming. Randy says she reminds him a bit of Jordin Sparks. She sings "Joyful Joyful." Kara says she is impressed with her because she heard her practicing in the bathroom a few times, which is one of the stranger comments we've heard tonight. Randy says she has a natural talent. Everyone votes yes, and it's golden-ticket time.

In case you thought David Osmond was the designated heart-wrenching audition of the evening, you were wrong. (It's OK; I was, too.) The last auditioner of the evening is 17-year-old Rose Flack. She is a hippie chick and is living with her best friend's family. Her father died when she was 13, and her mother was killed two years later in a car accident. She says that "this is the determination of the rest of my life," and that she doesn't know what she will do if she doesn't get a golden ticket. In the audition room, Simon asks her to tell them something about her, and she says that she is charming. They agree. She sings "I Feel the Earth Move," and they cut back and forth between her and Simon's expression, which is inscrutable. Paula says she is interesting, but she needs to work on her vocals. Simon says it wasn't the best song choice ever, but there is something he really likes about her. They vote yes, and she is headed to Hollywood.

Ryan then says that's 13 who made it to the next level, but it seems like we saw footage of more people than that getting tickets.

Tomorrow night, it's New York City and San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Ryan narrates that it's the "most dramatic episode ever." Next week, it's Hollywood time.

Call me crazy, but I felt like this was the best episode so far this season. We got good glimpses at some of the talent, one rather intriguing bad audition, and a new take on the montage of badness. Still, I'm looking forward to getting past tomorrow night and on to the expanded Hollywood round next week.

BO Report: Akki's CC2C is a complete disaster

Akshay Kumar's much-hyped Chandni Chowk To China has got a big thumbs down from the audience and critics alike. The film has had an average opening. Collections have fallen further during the weekend. With collections on Monday showing a massive slump, not even a miracle can save the film or recover its Rs 50 crore plus cost it seems.

A good buzz associated with a biggie was missing for CC2C and it resulted in a lackluster response to the prepaid shows on Thursday evening. It managed to collect around Rs 1.5 crore net from the paid preview shows which is not much considering the number of shows organised for the film or compared to other recent biggies' paid preview shows.

On Friday the opening all over India wasn't too great either. The all India average opening on Friday was 65-70%. Normally the weekend collections see a rise even if the reports are bad but CC2C proved to be an exception with collections falling drastically at many places for the weekend. Also, just like Nikhil Advani's last release, Salaam-E-Ishq, the paid preview shows proved to be a big mistake as the negative word spread too fast resulting in low turnout, opine industry insiders.

The total first weekend net collections for the film are said to be around Rs 21 crore, thanks to a better response in centers like Delhi/NCR and Punjab. But at least Rs 30 crore plus business was expected by the distributors for a film this big.

The opening weekend collections for CC2C has been as follows in major multiplexes around India, PVR 55-60%, BIG Cinemas 50-55%, Cinemax 50-55% and Fun Cinemas 45-50%. Most of these multiplexes are seriously considering to reduce the number of shows allocated to the film and add Ghajini shows instead.

Trade buzz

Not a single trade person has a good word to say about CC2C. Amar Solanki, veteran trade analyst says, "You can't defend your film claiming it to be a 'leave your brains at home' entertainer. You need to apply your own brains while making it, which doesn't seem so in this case. Over Rs 50 crores have been spent in making this blunder and many more in marketing it. But the audience has become so smart nowadays that they can smell a FLOP from a distance, no wonder they preferred to stay away from this."

Solanki further adds, "Brand Akshay Kumar has taken a severe beating now with two consecutive flops in Jumbo and CC2C. His repetitiveness in acting and plots of his films has started boring the audience. It's high time he pulls up his socks or else he will no longer be in the race to claim himself as the next superstar."

Manoj Desai of G-7 multiplex tells us, "On Thursday for the paid preview show, our 1000 capacity screen didn't even have 200 people. We had 70% collections on Friday and the weekend saw a further slump to just 30%. We haven't found a single person who has liked the film."

A senior trade analyst states, "It's a big lesson for the Hollywood Studios trying to make it big in Bollywood. First it was Sony's Saawariya and now Warner Bros' CC2C. Both have been lavishly made but have been very low in content. In India it is no longer big names and mega budgets that pull in the crowds, content has emerged as the king."

"The makers had arranged premieres of the film at various big cities of the world, but for none of these premieres did Akshay, Deepika Padukone or Nikhil Advani wait beyond a few minutes after the film started, perhaps they knew what they had in store!" he concludes.

Cast promotes upcoming Bollywood flick 'Raaz- The Mystery Continues'

Mumbai, Jan 14 (ANI): The cast and crew of upcoming flick 'Raaz-The Mystery Continues', which is being touted as the costliest horror film made so far in Bollywood, promoted the movie at an event here.
The film is produced by Mukesh Bhatt, directed by Mohit Suri and stars actors Emraan Hashmi, Adhyayan Suman and Kangna Ranaut.
The film is inspired by Indian myths and legends and is said to be biggest budget horror film ever been made in the country.
Dispelling any resemblance, the earlier Bollywood flick 'Raaz' which in many ways super headed the birth of experimental cinema within Bollywood making the world of supernatural fair game for Indian film-makers and combined horror with romance, Bollywood actor, Suman said that the narrative of this film was very different.
"This film is completely different, the star cast is different, the director is different and everything about the film is different. There is no similarity between the earlier 'Raaz' and this 'Raaz'," said Suman.
The film essays the story of an artist Prithvi, who experiences mysterious and distressing visions about Nandita, a woman he has never met, while he paints on canvas.
Intrigued by these visions, Prithvi tracks her down and warns her that these are not merely paintings of her, but accidents that are waiting to happen.
Initially, Nandita refuses to believe him but the striking resemblance between Prithvi's paintings and the near - death incidents in her life is hard to ignore.
Kangna who is also Suman's love interest in real life these days said that they have portrayed the emotions demanded by the script on screen keeping their personal chemistry at bay.
"The chemistry of the characters that we have portrayed in this film was according to the demand of the script. We have not portrayed the chemistry of the lovers like we are in the real life. I think the way Adhyayan treats me in real life is very personal," said Kangna.
Bollywood lyrics writer Sayeed Qadri and Kumaar have penned the lyrics of the film. Te music is composed by Toshi, Sharib Sabri, Raju Singh and Gourov Dasgupta.
Plethora of Bollywood singers like Toshi, K.K, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghosal and Neeraj Shridhar have lent their voice to the songs of the film.

'Taare Zameen Par' out of Oscars race

Los Angeles, Jan 14 (IANS) Aamir Khan's directorial debut 'Taare Zameen Par' failed to make it to the short-list in the Foreign Language Film category of the Oscar nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards 2009.
The Oscar selection committee announced Tuesday a list of nine movies out of which five will make into the final competition out of a total of 65 entries with each country choosing one film.
According to a press statement released on Oscars' official website: 'Waltz with Bashir' (Israel), '3 Monkeys' (Turkey), 'Revanche' (Austria), 'The Necessities of Life' (Canada), 'The Baader Meinhof Complex' (Germany), 'Departures' (Japan), 'Tear This Heart Out' (Mexico), 'Everlasting Moments' (Sweden) and 'The Class' (France) have made it to the second round.
The five nominees will be announced Jan 22.
Earlier, Aamir missed an Oscar opportunity when Ashutosh Gowariker-directed 'Lagaan' made it to the nominations in the foreign language nominations, but failed to bag the award.

Mumbai, Jan 14 (IANS) Madhu Mantena, who co-produced the super hit film 'Ghajini' with Allu Arvind, has presented an Oscar-sized gold statuette worth Rs.8 million to Aamir Khan.
It was designed specially to resemble the star's look in the action thriller, 'eight-pack-abs included', said Mantena.
The statuette has reportedly cost the producer close to Rs.7-8 million. Mantena gave it to Aamir earlier this week, at a party held to celebrate the film's success.
'It has a certain amount of other metal to make it mouldable. Solid gold wouldn't allow the identical 'Ghajini' shape. But the idea was to create an Oscar-sized statue exclusively for 'Ghajini'. Aamir knew he was getting a trophy. But he didn't know it would be golden and with his 'Ghajini' look. He was overwhelmed,' Mantena told IANS.

The pair first sparked romance rumours after they were spotted dining with a group of friends at the Kapalua Resort, Hawaii last week. Scott, however, played down the speculations after the final round at the Mercedes-Benz Championship over the weekend.

Britney Spears quits Los Angeles home for quiet life

London, Jan 14 (IANS) Pop star Britney Spears has quit her Los Angeles home and is all set to move into a sprawling new mansion to escape the paparazzi and her troubled past.

The singer has bought a $8.9 million house in a gated community in the Calabasas area of California and is currently transferring all her belongings to her new abode, reports contactmusic.com.

Spears decided to move out of her Studio City, California mansion to lead a placid life and be closer to her sons - Sean Preston, three, and Jayden James, two.

The star began preparations for the move last June, when she told the commissioner overseeing her conservatorship that she wanted to relocate to 'a lower density, more quiet and less trafficked neighbourhood'.

Her choice of residence has also proved to be a hit with her kids.

'I just took my babies to our new home, and they loved it! I can't wait to move in,' she posted on her website.

For Kate Winslet - New York resident, perennial Oscar nominee and the very model of a modern major movie star - the road to her own Oscar revolution may begin at Sunday's 66th annual Golden Globe Awards.

The show can be seen live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills beginning at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Winslet, who at 33 is the youngest actress to have racked up five Academy Award nominations, is a likely Globe winner for either Best Actress in a Drama for "Revolutionary Road" or Best Supporting Actress for "The Reader." A triumph for her in either category could be repeated when this year's Oscars are handed out Feb. 22.

Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 22.

Winslet goes into the evening with five unwon Globe nominations as well. Her competitors Sunday - who include Angelina Jolie ("Changeling"), Meryl Streep ("Doubt"), Anne Hathaway ("Rachel Getting Married"), Penelope Cruz ("Vicky Cristina Barcelona") and Marisa Tomei ("The Wrestler") - should be prepared to slip their speeches back into their purses.

But the English actress, married to her "Revolutionary Road" director Sam Mendes and mother of two kids (her and Mendes' son, Joe, is 5; Mia, her daughter with British filmmaker Jim Threapleton, is 8), considers being a New York mom her most important role. She's frequently spotted dropping her kids at school and bopping around her Chelsea neighborhood when not on film sets.

The family also has a residence in the British countryside.

"We divide our time, and it's great," Winslet told the Daily News.

"I think it also helps the kids just be regular kids. The other thing that's important to us is that the kids know that Sam and I do what we do because we love it and it's hard work. It's not just a glamorous thing."

Mendes, an Oscar winner for "American Beauty," is currently directing "The Cherry Orchard" and "The Winter's Tale" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the Bridge Project, a collaboration with London's Old Vic theater. He and Winslet, together since 2001, bought their loft in the city in 2004.

"It's very possible in New York to be yourself, free of all judgment," Winslet told The News. "That's one of the great things about the city - you are who you are, and people are very accepting."

Winslet's previous Oscar and Globe nominations - Supporting Actress nods for "Sense and Sensibility" (1995) and "Iris" (2001) and Best Actress for "Titanic" (1997), "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004) and "Little Children" (2006) - certainly haven't gone to her head, but she's honest enough to speak from her heart.

"I think having gone through award season so many times and not winning, I'm very good at losing and enjoying it," she joked at the "Revolutionary Road" premiere last month.

But of her Oscar chances this year, Winslet did tell a British magazine, "I want to win. ... I'm not denying that. I don't want to be sitting there with a fixed grin on my face while someone else wins."

One of the best things about growing up in SoCal, besides wearing sunglasses all year round, is frequent trips to Disneyland. To me, nothing could be more magical than a 60 ft tall pine tree covered with thousands of Christmas lights and decorations. Sleeping Beauty's Castle, Disneyland

I hate crowd and long lines at amusement parks. However, being the Disneyland enthusiast that I am, I’ve learned to visit parks when there are predictable lulls in tickets sales. It goes without saying that, every year, Christmas and summer are the most difficult times to find an off-day. Daytime hours on weekdays are always a good bet, but since the real magic at the Magic Kingdom happens at night, you may just need to brave the throngs of people.
But this year especially, with warm, glowing lights that decorating Main Street, and a fiber-optic recreation of snow transforming both Sleeping Beauty’s castle and my beloved 60-foot-Christmastree into an enchanting, wintery vision, Disney’s Christmas is a unique celebration. Since this year’s season lasts until Sunday, January 4th, I suggest going after New Year’s. Although the final days of the season fall on a weekend, most people are preparing for work/school after the long vacation and are not looking for more holiday-season experiences.
One of my favorite performances is one of the most unexpected: the It’s A Small World Clock Show. At every quarter hour, the large clock on the façade of the ride stops and the Small World characters come out wearing their various holiday attire. A three minute animated performance set to Tchaikovsky is projected on the walls and the façade of the attraction comes alive with graphics and colored lights. Each show has a different theme, (my favorite being the “candy avalanche”, but the “snowstorm buildup” also appears to be a favorite). I love Clock Show because it’s just a magical, refreshing way to stay uplifted while traveling from one land to the next. Kind of how I feel about the holidays.

A DC fashion photographer's Top 5 Models of 2008

Souleye of Sharp Focus Photography in DC, is a very creative, terrific DC fashion photographer who was born in Senegal, West Africa in 1951. He has been interested in photography since he was young. Souleye purchased his first camera when he was a student in Senegal. "Soon I was reading a lot about photography. I had subscriptions to all of the magazines you could think of including 'American Photography.' I would go to the American Cultural Center, and I read all of their photography books, and with all of that theory and looking at famous photographers, I really schooled myself in photography," he explains.

Souleye wanted to study photography formally in college, but his uncle told him that it was too risky, so he earned a B.A. in English with a minor in German from the University of Dakar. He came to DC in 1998, and started Sharp Focus Photography in 2000. He says: "Sharp Focus is a connotation that is trying to focus on the inner psychology of the person that you want to take pictures of, to try to bring that out. I used to do a lot of portraits, and a portrait only has artistic value when it can communicate something to the third party."

Souleye has selected five of his favorite DC models that he worked with in 2008, and you can view their photos in the link at the end of this article. Stephanie Grant is a junior at Georgetown University, majoring in English and minoring in Studio Art. She has been modeling for almost two years. Miriam Gardin directed and produced a world premiere production in the Capital Fringe Festival in DC, and is now living in New York and studying for a MFA in Performance Arts Management from Brooklyn College.

Zlata is originally from Russia, and lives in the DC area. She danced for ten years, and her work included jazz and modern dance. Souleye comments about her: "She is very comfortable in front of the camera." Dannielle Lind is an experienced model who lives and works in Northern Virginia. The types of images she enjoys modeling for include: fashion, editorial, and beauty. Lucie Starz is a petite model of Vietnamese origin who grew up in the U.S., and now lives and works in Vienna, Virginia. "She is well known in the DC circuit, since she's modeled for most photographers," says Souleye.

Despite delivering a superhit like Murder in 2004, the Bhatts and Mallika Sherawat continue to share a love-hate relationship and have never worked together again. Mallika babe had dissociated herself from the Bhatt camp after the success of Murder because of their stingy attitude. She had apparently turned down the films they had offered (Tumsa Nahi Dekha, Gangster) when they paid no attention to her demand for a fat pay packet.
But things were meant to get better when Mallika had agreed on principle to do a Pooja Bhatt production a few months back. This film, titled Cabaret, was to be the directorial debut of Pooja's in-house writer, Shagufta Rafique.
Pooja wanted to start the film in early 2009, so recently the actress-turned-filmmaker went to Mallika to work out the schedule. But she was in for a rude shock when Mallika quoted a very high price again, more than what they had earlier agreed upon. Known for her bluntness, Pooja gave back a mouthful to Mallika stating how she didn't deserve even half of what she was asking for after two back-to-back solo flops. The filmmaker left in a huff, saying that she would rather make the film with a rank newcomer. News is that Pooja has now begun auditioning new girls for the same role.

Akki heads for Goa with Twinkle

A little birdie tells us that Akshay Kumar is headed to Goa. If rumours are to be believed Akki will be with Twinkle and bring in her birthday on December 29.

I am also told that Twinkle has been gifted a Bentley! Apparently he's quite proud of his wife, an interior designer by profession and just wanted to show how much he loved her!

Twinkle, also known as Tina has become the second woman by the name to receive an expensive gift. The other Tina – Ambani was gifted an expensive yacht recently by Anil Ambani.

Sigh! Wish I was called Tina too.

Jackson camp denies lung transplant report

A spokesman for Michael Jackson released a statement on Monday denying as a "total fabrication" a report claiming that the pop legend needs a lung transplant due to a rare respiratory disease.
The statement, attributed to Jackson's "official and sole spokesperson, Dr Tohme Tohme" and issued by Los Angeles firm Scoop Marketing, cites an interview with writer Ian Halperin in a British newspaper in which Halperin said Jackson was suffering from Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency.
Halperin, who is at work on an unauthorised biography of the singer, also claims Jackson can barely speak, suffers from emphysema and internal bleeding, and has lost 95 per cent of the vision in his left eye. "Concerning this author's allegations, we would hope in the future that legitimate media will not continue to be exploited by such an obvious attempt to promote this unauthorised 'biography,'" said the statement attributed to Tohme.
"The writer's wild allegations concerning Jackson's health are a total fabrication," the statement said. "Jackson is in fine health and finalising negotiations with a major entertainment company and television network for both a world tour and a series of specials and appearances."
Michael Jackson "close to death", reports UK media. Jackson, 50, one of the best-selling recording artists of all time, began his musical career with his siblings in the Motown group the Jackson 5 and went on release such hit solo albums as Thriller.
But the singer has been dogged since the 1990s by scandal and revelations about his eccentric lifestyle. He was tried and acquitted of child sex abuse charges in 2005.

Ravi Shukla wins VOI 2008

The Delhi boy beat favourite Saptaparna Chakraborty from Sikkim

Ravi Shukla has won the Amul Star Voice of India 2008 title, in a fitting finale on Sunday, December 21, 2008. He beat Saptaparna Chakraborty from Sikkim, who was the favourite to win it.
As normally happens in a reality show these days, Ravi's win surprised everyone, as Saptaparna's face was splashed all over the media before the finale in anticipation of her victory.
But that was not to be. Viewers voted in Ravi instead to take home the title in the second season of Gajendrra Singh's show.
At the beginning of the finale, everyone paid tribute to deceased Voice of India winner (first season) Ishmeet Singh, and a trust in his name was founded. Ishmeet's family was also present on the occasion.

At a jewellery launch, Kaif showed the poise of a true star

You would have expected Katrina Kaif to fumble or search for words when she was asked about her 'look-alikes' who Salman Khan was promoting. But without batting an eyelid, the star replied, "That's so sweet of him!" adding that she hadn't seen them and was quite sure they were good looking.
Katrina faced the media at a plush Mumbai hotel where a prominent jewellery brand launched a new television commercial featuring her. The brand, which Aishwarya Rai Bachchan endorsed initially, chose Kaif as their 'Goddess of Luck' because 'she has been the lucky mascot of Bollywood with almost all her films proving successful'.
Needless the media, hungry for some controversy, quizzed her about stepping into Ash's shoes. Instead of evading the question, Kaif smilingly reminded the members of the press that they need not make a mountain out of a molehill. "There was someone endorsing it before me and someone will step in after me too," she pointed out.IN PICS: Katrina makes Nakshatra chief happy!
Question after controversial question, Katrina answered with the poise of a star and showed just why she is one of the most promising new number one leading lady.
Kaif who has always been a bit of controversy's child also replied to questions about her association with Akshay Kumar. The two were reportedly linked after many of their films began to do well at the box office. This liaison was also supposed to be the reason behind the alleged rift between her and Salman Khan.
Facing the media at the launch however, Katrina Kaif showed that she didn't need Salman Khan to become successful.
Kaif, who has Yash Raj's New York lined up for release refused to comment on the film since 'Yash Raj is very specific about the way they promote their films'. The star is also said to act opposite Shah Rukh Khan in a venture to be directed by veteran Yash Chopra.
Katrina is also starring in five other films with some of the most enviable banners. And with some high profile brands now coming her way it certainly seems like the new number one is finally here.

Shah Rukh Khan : Billu Barber Produced by Shah Rukh Khan, the film is being directed by Priyadashan. The cast of the film includes SRK, Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav and Asrani. Billu Barber, which is a remake of the hugely successful Malayalam movie Kadha Parayumbol, has already been remade in Tamil titled Kuselan starring Pasupathy and Rajinikanth but it didn’t do well at the box office.

Akshay proves that he can lure not just the ladies but their kids as well to the theatre

I never thought I would like a film where the hero literally blows his own trumpet. And is also fat, round and blue. But I did. Especially because Jumbo is one of the cutest, most filmy animation flicks I have seen in a long time which also has a moral unlike Roadside Romeo which was filmy and cute but not didactic.
Though a official remake of a Thai animated film Khan Kluay, Jumbo does not feel any different from a regular Bollywood film except for the houses which look a cross between the Oriental and Indian and a few characters who have a-little-too-extended eyes.
For many the 'paisa vasool' might happen in the first five minutes of the film when an absolutely gorgeous Akshay Kumar will be seen swinging to a hip hop number 'Everything's gonna be all right'. But hold on…what follows is heart warming nonetheless.
Jumbo is about a small cute blue elephant called Jaiveer (Jumbo for his loved ones) who likes to play hide and seek with frogs rather than indulge in a display of machismo with the other elly toddlers. Jumbo however is not really happy. He misses his dad. His dad, who is rumoured to be a coward, ran away from the elephant community.
Grief stricken Jumbo questions his mother about the father he'd never met and learns that he was captured by humans (BAD EVIL HUMANS). And so, to rescue his daddy, Jaiveer sets on a journey to the human camp close to the jungle. Unluckily he fails in his quest. On his way back home, he meets a pink, pretty eyed elephant Sonia (now every hero however fat and round deserves to have a heroine right?). Sonia, who by the way despises being called Pinky accompanies Jumbo back home only to find his mother gone. So the friendly Sonia takes the crestfallen Jumbo to her home - a village full of good humans.
And here's where Jumbo's real journey begins – to find his parents and become the king's royal elephant.

Box Office: Rab Ne… gets a mixed response

SRK's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi hasn't really opened to an overall bumper response, but it is gradually picking up. Carrying mixed reports, the film has managed to attach a 'good opening' tag solely because of weekend collections. It had a slow opening on Friday in Mumbai but the collections went on to improve later. With a slight slump in the collections happening today it remains to be seen whether the film will achieve the same amount of success, which SRK-Aditya Chopra got with their two films, DDLJ and Mohabbatein.

BO collections

Rab Ne... managed to collect Rs 7.5 crore net collections on day-one, with business ranging from good to very good in centers like Punjab, Delhi/NCR, Punjab and Mysore. In Punjab circuit alone the collections were Rs 75 lakh, making the film second best grosser of 2008 after Singh Is Kinng.

In the Mumbai-Thane circuit the film opened in 94 cinemas and while it started at 60% on Friday first show, but the collections saw a rise in the weekend. The centers where the film has opened low are Bihar, CP Berar, CI and Rajasthan circuits.

The opening weekend collections for RNBDJ have been as follows, PVR-70%, Fame-60%, G-7 – 85% and Adlabs 75-85%.

Will Rab Ne... be another DDLJ?

A senior trade analyst tells us, "The budget of RNBDJ seems to be in the range of Rs 18-20 crore. Looking at its opening trends, it seems set to garner at least Rs 20 crore in India alone and between Rs 16-18 crore from the overseas. Music sales may earn Yash Raj Rs. 5 crore. The satellite rights will get the film anywhere between Rs. 13-15 crore. So in total the film will do business of at least Rs. 58-60 crore which doesn't seem bad at all."

Trade Analyst Amod Mehra says, "The film didn't get an opening befitting a well anticipated SRK film. But the collections did improve considerably for the weekend. If the length is reworked then there are chances for the film to do better."

Manoj Desai of G-7 tells us, "Today on Monday the matinee show collections have fallen drastically. The film opened well at our multiplex but the audience response while coming out of the cinema screens is not so encouraging. Not many seem to have enjoyed the film. Flaws such as the film being too lengthy or the illogical situation of SRK's own wife in the film not recognising him in another avatar when even a small kid in the cinema hall can, are going against it."

MUSIC REVIEW: Chandni Chowk to China

The music of Chandni Chowk to China is completely irreverent, delightfully cheeky, and a whole lot of fun. It pays tribute to our abiding love for everything Chinese. And it challenges certain musical conventions, what with its curious mix of composers, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Kailash Naresh Paresh, Bappi Lahiri and Bohemia.

The first track S.I.D.H.U. simply explodes on your senses. The qawwali-style song by Kailash Paresh Naresh and sung by Kailash Kher, begins with a phrase that goes: "Bade Bade Bade Bade…" almost in a loop. The comic anticipation is heightened by the way Kher renders the phrase, before finally telling you what the heck he means by "Bade Bade." "O Sapney Dekhe Bade Bade," Kher continues, and you can almost see the wicked glint in his eyes. Slapstick songwriting I guess, but it works. Especially when you visualise a completely OTT Akshay Kumar prancing around to the tune.

The song is well arranged, with only Indian instruments - dholak, harmonium, sitar (and not the electronic sitar/zitar as seems the trend these days) and bulbul tara - played by some obviously competent musicians. That coupled with Kher's earnest singing introduces you to Sidhu, the protagonist. And one could not perhaps have asked for a more fun and musically robust introduction.

Up next is the title track: Chandni Chowk to China, (Shankar Ehsaan Loy) performed by Neeraj Sridhar of Bombay Vikings, Anushka Manchanda and Shankar Mahadevan. In food parlance, this song could be best described as Chilli Paneer or Schezwan Paratha. SEL, mix tangy Chinese folk riffs and vocal samples with crunchy Indian folk, adding a dash of pop for a super fusion dish. A word here for Anushka Manchanda, whose voice lends itself beautifully to breezy, funky, jazzy and dance numbers. A domain strictly monopolised by Sunidhi Chauhan all this while. Once again, the lyrics shine in all their nonsensical glory, making it a complete value for money composition.

India Se Aya Mera Dost has a surprise by way of famous percussionist Taufiq Qureshi (wonder why is his name spelt so strangely on the CD sleeve), who lets go on the drums and vocals. A powerful drum intro flows into the opening bars of the old hit, Bombay Se Aya Mera Dost. Originally composed by Bappi Lahiri for the film Aap Ki Khatir, this was for a long time THE song at drunken revelries . The new version features Bappi and his son Bappa, Bombay becomes India, while Qureshi's electrifying body and vocal percussions give it an interesting Afro-Indian feel. Bappida is no singer, but an entertainer. And you will easily forgive his singing or his unapologetic Bengali accent and tend to go with his passion. This song is indeed a crazy mix of styles and genres that makes it a great party number.

'Dhoom 2' being remade in Kannada

Mumbai, Nov 21 (IANS) Yash Raj Films' super hit action thriller 'Dhoom 2' is being made in Kannada and Aryan Vaid will play Hrithik Roshan's part in the 'unofficial' remake.

It is unofficial because 'Dubai Babu', the Kannada version of 'Dhoom 2', has neither sought not got an official go-ahead from Yash Raj Films. The film is being directed by Naganna.

'My character is as flamboyant, but much meaner and far more cold-blooded than Hrithik's. Ash's character is played by Nikita, while Uday Chopra's character is played by a Kannada actor called Kumar Govind. These are fairly well-known names of the Kannada film industry while Upendra, of course, is superstar and the director Naganna is top name in the Kannada industry,' Aryan told IANS.

Aryan, replicating Hrithik's penchant for masquerades, will be go through a series of disguises in the film.

'My get-ups are almost identical to Hrithik's. They signed me because they wanted a good-looking villain, like Hrithik in 'Dhoom 2',' he added.

This isn't the first 'Dhoom 2' rip off in the South. In Telugu, they made it as 'Dubai Seenu'.

Aishwarya Rai pays surprise visit to father on his b'day

Mumbai, Nov 21 (IANS) Aishwarya Rai took time off from her busy shooting schedule in Kochi for Mani Ratnam's 'Ravana' to fly back to Mumbai for dad Krishnaraj Rai's 70th birthday.

Krishnaraj got the surprise of his life when Aishwarya showed up for a very special family reunion on his birthday Thursday. Son-in-law Abhishek Bachchan was also expected to attend the occasion, but couldn't do so.

'It's exactly what he (Krishnaraj) wanted. To be with his closest ones. There was no party because he couldn't take it. Only the immediate family and, of course, his daughter's in-laws - Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan - who were expected to drop in to wish him,' a close family friend said.

Abhishek and Aishwarya are in the jungles of Kochi shooting for Mani Ratnam's tentatively titled 'Ravana'.

Abhishek told IANS on phone from Kochi: 'I'd have loved to be there because Aishwarya's parents are not just my in-laws. They're a second set of parents that god has blessed me with. Unfortunately, much as I tried I couldn't get away from here even for a few hours.'

It's a known fact that Ratnam likes to shoot in complete isolation and at a stretch without any interruption. But when the maverick moviemaker came to know that it was Aishwarya's father's 70th birthday, he quickly gave his leading lady the consent to zip back to Mumbai to be with her ailing dad on this special day.

'Although Aishwarya has been her thoroughly professional self throughout the time when her father has been undergoing treatment for a serious sickness, her heart has been in Mumbai with her father. When Mani heard it was her father's birthday, he let her go without a second thought,' said a source.

Aishwarya also took the opportunity to fulfil a long-standing commitment for an endorsement before flying back to Cochin to resume shooting.

Southern beauty who debuts before Asin

The way media is going ballistic over the Hindi film debut of South import Asin, it is being widely speculated that she could well be the next Big thing that Bollywood is laying out the red carpet for. Of course, being a part of an Aamir Khan film comes with its own perks and there is no wondering the fact that Ghajini is not just being noticed for the perfectionist Khan but also his latest heartthrob on screen - Asin.

However, even as Asin waits for her Bollywood debut till 25th December, the day when Ghajini releases, another sensation from South, Sada, would be announcing her arrival in Bollywood. Though the pretty girl hasn't been hogging the limelight in a manner similar to that of Asin, Sada too comes with a decent repertoire of films behind her, most notable being Anniyan which has already been released in Hindi as Aparichit. The film had arrived in theaters 2 years back and was a decent grosser even in its Hindi version.
The doors opened for Sada then and soon she went into a signing spree. Of course, not all her choices could be really called smart but out of the four films that she signed and has almost finished shooting for, she is now waiting for her first film to make an arrival at the big screen.

Well, the wait is over for Sada as she would be debuting 10 days from now in Khallballi - Fun Unlimited where she is paired with Nikhil Dwivedi who himself debuted earlier this year in My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves. Though Sada is not featuring in what one may call as a 'heroine oriented role', what cannot be denied is the fact that the film belongs to comedy genre, something that should click with the audience.

Says director Ajay Chandok, for whom Khallballi - Fun Unlimited is his next directorial outing after Nehlle Pe Dehlla (Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu), "We were looking at a right face in this film which is mainly dominated by close to three dozen comic actors. She had to be someone who would stand out in the crowd and Sada fitted in the bill perfectly well. As Nikhil Dwivedi's love interest, she gets the glamour quotient on in the film."

After the release of Khallballi - Fun Unlimited on 28th November, Sada would also be seen in Click (opposite Shreyas Talpade), Love Khichdi (with Randeep Hooda) and Raja Bundela's Sirf Romance - Love By Chance.
